An Unusual Competition machine – the Ariel Square 4

When one thinks of Ariel motorcycles and completion machines, the models that spring to mind are the HT5, HS5 and Red Hunter; the square 4 is not an obvious choice of mount!

This is a short blog post detailing some interesting achieve material that relates to the competing on a Square 4. Illustrated in the photo below is a pair of Trophies won by A.E  Hare for the following events:

  • 1938 Leiston and District Motorcycle Club Hill Climb, fastest unlimited

  • 1939 Leiston and District Motorcycle Club Horsfall Cup Replica for best performance outside events

The following image shows Mr Hare in action on his Ariel Square 4 at the 1939 Exeter Trial where he won a Premier award. It can be seen that his mount is the second series 4G square four which utilised the 1000cc pushrod engine. As well as this admirable results, A.E. Hare also won awards for competing at Donington (2nd in 5 lap handicap in July 1939). So it shows that you do not always have to be on the de rigueur machine of choice to get a good result!

  2. Just acquired three photos of A.E. Hare competing in the 1939 Lands End Trial and Edinburgh Trial and also a hill climb at Lyng. Came with a silver spoon for the Leiston & District MC Trial in 1938 for 1st place.
